Explanation of Academic Paper Assignment SS16
You are required to submit a paper on a health care ethics topic of your choosing.  The topics provided in List 1 and List 2 for your blog assignment are good places to start, but be sure that the topic of your paper is different from either your news article/commentary or blog assignment topics.  And remember, as with all academic writing, you must have a specific focus for your paper that is reflected in your thesis statement.
Type of Paper:    Analytical research paper which essentially means the exploration and evaluation of a topic which, unlike an argumentative research paper, is not persuasive.  For example, in a paper about assisted death, you would be taking a new approach to the topic based on your research rather than trying to persuade the reader that your perspective is the correct one.  Refer to the Purdue OWL information about this type of paper at https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/658/02/
Length of Paper:    5-6 pages (or roughly 1500 words), double-spaced, 12-point type size, Calibri or Times New Roman font, title page and reference page not included.
References     The recommended number of references for this paper is 7-9 scholarly references.  Scholarly references include peer-reviewed journal articles, and reports from government agencies or professional associations that are part of the grey literature.  An example of grey literature is the actual text of the February 2015 assisted death ruling from the Supreme Court of Canada which can be found on the Internet. Thus, you may obtain information from online sources, but remember how to cite such sources properly.  Another example is that a peer-reviewed journal article can be accessed from a print publication or from a journal’s web site.  Remember to look for a DOI (digital object identifier) associated with a published article as DOIs are becoming much more common.
Your references must follow APA style. Proper style means appropriate citations within the text of your paper plus a page listing all citations at the end of the paper (titled References).
