Structure:
Answers to case study questions should normally be organized in paragraphs of approximately 100-150 words, with each paragraph focused on explanation of one idea. There should be a logical progression of ideas as demonstrated by linked arguments/points made in each paragraph. Each paragraph should commence with a topic sentence and end with a link to the next paragraph.
Communicate using academic writing:
Adhere to conventions of written English (word choice, professional language, grammar, use of appropriate sentence structure, punctuation and spelling)
Use of direct quotations: Unless really necessary, most assignments do not require the use of direct quotes, but rather the re-expression of others’ arguments into your own words (paraphrasing). If a direct quotation is used, the student must explain how it adds to the discussion.

Case Study
It is 0730 on May 1st and you have been allocated Ms Kristina Peate as one of your patients in the general medical unit. Ms Peate, 62 years old, was admitted 24 hours ago with a suspected chest infection. She has recently been on a cruise to South East Asia and on her return was experiencing fever, some shortness of breath and a non-productive cough.
Ms Peate has been commenced on intravenous antibiotic and antifungal (erythromycin and fluconazole) as broad spectrum coverage for the infection. Ms Peate has complained of nausea since admission and has subsequently been ‘off her food’ and ‘not drinking very much’.
Ms Peate has a history of atrial fibrillation, rheumatoid arthritis, migraine, and a past history of hepatitis A she contracted in her teens. She insists that the medical officer prescribes her St John’s wort, which she has taken over the past month, on the suggestion of a friend to assist with her mood.
When you assess Ms Peate you find that her observations are:
Temperature: 38.1 0C (tympanic)
Heart rate – 84 bpm (irregular)
Blood pressure – 115/65 mmHg
Respirations – 24 bpm
O₂ saturation – 96% on RA
Q1. Assess Ms Peate’s medication chart. Identify and explain three significant risks that may be associated with the use of the medicines (home or inpatient use) for Ms Peate. (Expect approximately 400 words) 30 marks
Q2. Describe the strategies a nurse may take to prevent/manage the specific risks you have identified in Question 1. Your answer should focus on Ms Peate’s needs rather than a discussion on the actual medicines. (Expect approximately 600 words)
30 marks
Q3. Ms Peate experiences worsening nausea and associated vomiting. As you approach Ms Peate to administer the IV antibiotic she says “I’m not having that medication again. It’s making me very sick.” Briefly outline five procedural/ethical aspects that a nurse should consider in this situation. (Expect approximately 300 words) 10 marks
Q4. Prior to discharge Ms Peate is commenced on oral fluconazole for her infection. Briefly explain the patient education that the nurse would be required to provide for this patient prior to discharge. (Expect approximately 200 words) 10 marks
