American Foreign Policy
George Washington warned a young America of the dangers of entangling European
alliances and overseas commitments. For most of America’s history, U.S. policy
makers have heeded his warning. Select an argument from the individual, domestic,
and systemic level of analysis to explain the rise of America’s global leadership and
foreign activism during and after World War II. According to each explanation, how
and why did America assume this global role? Which do you think is the better
explanation and why? Use historical examples where possible.
