Experimental Versus Quasi-Experimental DesignsAfter reading Chapter 5 in the course text compare and contrast the similarities and differences between experimental and quasi-experimental designs. Describe the different ways in which an independent variable can be manipulated. Demonstrate application of the scientific method and ethical principles by explaining what dictates the selection of design (experimental versus quasi-experimental) and the type of manipulation used in a research study. Finally, give an example of a situation that could be studied with an experiment or quasi-experiment and assess the appropriateness of one design over the other in light of practical and ethical concerns.Your initial post should be 250 to 300 words. Utilize a minimum of two peer-reviewed sources that were published within the last 10 years and are documented in APA style, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Imagine you are the president of a multiracial society, and a major race riot occurs in one of the largest metropolises in your nation. There is burning of buildings, damaging both property and individuals. It is a response to a court ruling where some police officers are acquitted after being tried for what seemed to be very blatant acts of racist police brutality. Although you did not issue an official statement about the officers’ conduct immediately following the incident, because you believed they were “innocent until proven guilty,” you responded with immediate deployment of national guard and public statement condemning the racist violence on the day of the riot. This resulted in some civil rights groups accusing you of being “racist.” The accusation deeply offended you, and you immediately referred to your multiracial family and friendship network in defensive response. You also deflected by directing public attention to the rioters, who you described as being racist by attacking white and Asian owned businesses. (a) Please apply the terms prejudice and racism to this example, striking a clear contrast between each. (b) Discuss any frames and/or semantic moves/rhetorical styles you might be using in your “defensive” speech. (Use at least 2).

Incorporate theory and factual information in your response.Write your initial response in 2–3 paragraphs. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.By Sunday, August 17, 2014Case Study—JimJim is a former alcoholic who has been sober for ten years. He is heavily involved with AlcoholicsAnonymous (AA). He drank heavily for nearly thirty years before he lost his job, wife, family, and home. Itwas at that time that Jim hit “rock bottom” and decided to enter treatment. His treatment course involvedboth inpatient and outpatient services with a heavy focus on attending AA meetings for aftercare. He has suffered many relapses, which on many occasions caused him compounding relationship, legal, and financial problems. Jim’s last relapse was ten years ago. At his most recent AA meeting, Jim discussedsome of the trials he experienced with several of the twelve steps. He shared his story during that meetingto several new AA members. These members were not aware of the emotional pain they would have toface to become sober. They learned that changing drinking behavior is only one component of a muchlarger process in achieving and maintaining sobriety.Jim recounted how, to become sober, he had to separate from many of his friends, move away fromneighborhoods with bars, change his work schedule, and have a family member control his finances. Hehad particular difficulty with the task of making amends with those he had hurt in the past. Many of theseindividuals had since died or did not want to speak to him. The rejection he faced caused him to experiencea deep level of depression with an accompanying struggle with the urge to drink to medicate his emotions. He would have to face this potential for rejection continuously in his effort to remain sober.
